Counterfeit Corner: The Link Between Counterfeits and Terrorism

By Scott J. Allen

In late November, 2009, the United States Justice Department announced indictments against several groups of individuals for conspiring to support a terrorist organization, Hizballah. The individuals were charged with trafficking in stolen merchandise and selling counterfeit goods, specifically including the sale of counterfeit Nike® shoes and Mitchell & Ness® sports jerseys, in addition to attempting to unlawfully export weapons to Syria. According to a Justice Department statement, the indictments demonstrate that terrorist organizations rely on a variety of criminal activities – including trafficking in counterfeit goods – to fund themselves. The Justice Department’s complete statement regarding the indictments can be found on the internet at http://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/2009/November/09-ag-1278.html.
