LaRiviere, Grubman & Payne To Expand Operations in Asia
MONTEREY, CA -- One of the world’s most prominent trademark and patent attorneys has passed up big city penthouse law offices for a Monterey, California firm that specializes in intellectual property protection and enforcement.
Edward J. Kelly – who has worked on intellectual property enforcement for Yamaha, Mercedes Benz and Gucci -- has joined LaRiviere, Grubman & Payne(LGP).
The firm has 26 employees and plans to utilize Kelly as its key director of Asian operations. He will be based in Bangkok, shuttling among Hong Kong, Shanghai and California. Kelly, 43, has been heavily recruited by firms all over the world for his tough and innovative approach to enforcing copyrighted materials, trademarks, trade secrets and patents – particularly where organized crime syndicates are involved.
“We’ve known and worked with Ed a long time and he will fit well with our firm,” said LGP partner David LaRiviere. “He is simply one of the best in the world at pragmatic IP enforcement and he gives us a very strong hand.”
For his part, Kelly is thrilled to be with a nimble and progressive firm that fits his style of practice. “LGP is not a mega-firm,” he said. “But they have an intensity of focus I don’t see in the larger practices and that’s what makes them one of the elite IP law firms.”
Kelly completed his undergraduate degree at Duke, and obtained his law degree from the Boston University School of Law and Master of Laws in International Law from Golden Gate University School of Law in San Francisco. He is admitted to practice law in New York, California and in the US District Courts in New York and the Northern District of California.
He and his wife, Sasithorn “May” Jarukdee, have been instrumental in the legal battles to end human trafficking, and have been featured in several documentary films and news reports, including BBC, ABC and the National Geographic Society. They are key advisors to sisha.org a charitable foundation in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and Bangkok, Thailand. In October, he will be honored by his alma mater, Boston University School of Law. The school will present him with the Victor J. Garo Public Service Award for his volunteer work to stop human trafficking.
